Neck Pain

Chronic neck pain may present as pain primarily localized to the neck area, but often times it can radiate and lead to shoulder pain, arm pain, upper back pain, facial pain and headaches.  Common causes include arthritis, disc disease, narrowing of the spinal canal, whiplash injury, and myofascial or muscle pain.

Similar to the treatment of chronic low back pain, nonsurgical treatments include physical rehabilitation, meditation and mindfulness, lifestyle modifications, medications and injections.

Condition Causes

  1. Muscle Strain: One of the most common causes of neck pain is muscle strain. Poor posture, repetitive movements, sleeping in an awkward position, or sudden forceful movements can strain the neck muscles, leading to pain and stiffness.
  2. Whiplash Injury: Whiplash commonly occurs as a result of a sudden jerking motion of the head, often from a car accident or sports-related incident. This can cause strain or sprain in the neck muscles and ligaments, resulting in neck pain.
  3. Degenerative Conditions: Degenerative conditions such as osteoarthritis and cervical spondylosis can lead to neck pain. These conditions involve the gradual wear and tear of the cervical spine’s joints and discs, causing inflammation, stiffness, and discomfort.
  4. Herniated Disc: A herniated disc occurs when the soft, gel-like center of a spinal disc pushes through a weakened or damaged outer layer, potentially pressing on nerves in the neck and causing pain.
  5. Pinched Nerve: Nerve compression in the neck, often referred to as a pinched nerve, can result from herniated discs, bone spurs, or spinal misalignment. This compression can cause localized neck pain and radiating pain or numbness into the shoulders, arms, and hands.
  6. Poor Posture and Ergonomics: Prolonged periods of poor posture, such as hunching over a computer or slouching while sitting, can strain the muscles and ligaments in the neck, leading to chronic neck pain.

Condition Treatments

  1. Pain Medications: Over-the-counter nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help relieve mild to moderate neck pain. In severe cases, a healthcare professional may prescribe stronger pain medications or muscle relaxants.
  2. Physical Therapy: Physical therapy plays a crucial role in treating neck pain. A therapist can provide exercises to improve neck flexibility, strengthen muscles, and correct posture. They may also utilize techniques such as heat or cold therapy, ultrasound, or electrical stimulation for pain relief.
  3. Neck Exercises and Stretching: Specific exercises and stretches targeted at the neck can help relieve pain and improve mobility. These exercises may include gentle neck rotations, lateral head tilts, and chin tucks. It is important to consult with a healthcare professional or physical therapist for guidance on appropriate exercises for individual needs.
  4. Heat and Cold Therapy: Applying heat, such as a warm towel or heating pad, or cold therapy using ice packs, can help alleviate neck pain and reduce inflammation. Alternating between heat and cold therapy may also provide relief.
  5. Posture Correction: Maintaining good posture throughout the day can help prevent and alleviate neck pain. Ergonomic adjustments in the workplace, such as adjusting chair height or positioning the computer monitor at eye level, can promote proper posture and reduce strain on the neck.
  6. Neck Support Devices: Neck pillows or supportive collars can provide additional support to the neck, especially during sleep or while traveling. These devices can help maintain proper alignment and reduce strain on the neck muscles.
  7. Injections: In some cases, injections of corticosteroids or local anesthetics into specific areas of the neck may be recommended to provide short-term pain relief and reduce inflammation.
